What Factors Wear Out My Battery?

There are many different factors that can cause your battery to wear out over time. We want to fill you in on these various factors so that you can work to prolong your battery's lifetime! It may seem counterintuitive, but your battery can actually wear out from under-use. You car's battery charges as you drive, so cars that are rarely used can actually experience faster battery degradation. Be sure to drive your car for at least 30 minutes per week, and try to aim for at least one sustained drive, rather than many small bursts of driving. This allows your car to fully charge the battery, and ensure that all of your car's various parts are working. You should also do your best to keep your car out of extreme hot and cold temperatures, and part inside a garage, or underneath another shelter whenever possible.

Watch Out For Dim Lighting

One of the major telltale signs that your battery is wearing out is dim or flickering lights. Your car's battery powers your headlamps and taillamps, as well as the lights inside your cabin, and on your dashboard. If you notice one or more of these lights is starting to wear out, then your battery may be the culprit. Try to notice how bright the lights typically are, so that you can tell when they begin to dim. If you realize that your car's lights are flickering, or becoming less consistent, don't hesitate to schedule a service appointment. Be aware that leaving your headlights or cabin lights on while the car is off can also be a drain on your battery, and be sure to turn everything off when you park your car to conserve battery power.

Monitor Your Ignition

Another major sign that your battery is becoming worn is the feeling you get when you start the car. Whether you have a turn-key or push-button ignition, you want your car to start quickly, without struggling to turn over. If you notice delays in your engine's ignition, it can be a sign that the battery is worn out. You can get ahead of this issue by taking notice when there is any sign of delay in starting your car, and bringing your car in for maintenance right away. A sluggish start isn't always due to a battery issue, but whether the problem is with the battery, alternator, or engine itself, it's a good idea to address the issue promptly before it becomes a bigger problem.

How Can I Jump Start a Car?

To jump-start a car with a dead battery, you'll need a set of jumper cables and another vehicle with a working battery. First, park both cars close enough for the jumper cables to reach but ensure they don't touch. Turn off both vehicles and connect the red jumper cable to the positive terminal of the dead battery, then to the positive terminal of the good battery. Next, attach the black jumper cable to the negative terminal of the good battery and then to an unpainted metal surface on the dead car, away from the battery. Start the working car and let it run for a few minutes, then try starting the dead car. Once it starts, remove the cables in the reverse order that you connected them.
