Jeep Grand Cherokee 4x4 Systems

Quadra-Trac I is the Grand Cherokee's first 4x4 system. Running in 4-High at all times, Quadra-Trac I is a full-time automatic 4x4 system that sends 48% of torque to the front axle and 52% to the rear to provide phenomenal in all driving conditions with a single-speed transfer case. To instill even more driving confidence, the Quadra-Trac I system features a Brake Lock Differential. The sole purpose of this differential is to control the wheel speed from side to side rather than powering all four wheels simultaneously. For instance, if the right front tire is slipping while the left front has good traction, torque can be shifted from the right front tire to the left front, limiting the slip and increasing traction. Qaudra-Trac I comes paired with Selec-Terrain Traction Management, with Auto, Sport, Snow, and Sand/Mud modes. These modes make adjustments to the throttle control, transmission shift points, traction control, electronic stability control, and Brake Lock Differential to provide maximum traction in the selected terrain.

Up next is Quadra-Trac II, which provides drivers with even more confidence by replacing the single-speed transfer case with a two-speed transfer case. This allows drivers to choose between 4-High mode, which is designed for low-traction scenarios at normal driving speeds, or 4-Low mode for better traction at low speeds. Shifting into 4-Low mode while taking on hills in deep snow or tackling rugged off-road trails will get you the most traction. While the Quadra-Trac II system also uses a Brake Lock Differential, it adds even more traction by sending up to 100% of available engine torque to the axle with the most traction while limiting power to the axle that is slipping. Grand Cherokee models equipped with Quadra-Trac II add Rock mode to the Selec-Terrain system, adjusting the vehicle's systems to better handle low-speed crawling over rugged terrain and shifting the transfer case into 4-Low. 

The pinnacle of the Grand Cherokee's 4x4 system lineup is Quadra-Drive II. Like Quadra-Trac II, this system features a two-speed transfer case for both 4-High and 4-Low modes. Instead of a Brake Lock Differential, however, the Quadra-Drive II system uses an electronic limited-slip rear differential. Using a network of wheel spin sensors, the system will automatically detect a loss of traction and automatically redistribute up to 100% of available engine torque to a single wheel that has the most traction. The sensors are fine tuned to detect slip at the earliest possible moment and instantly take counteractive measures to limit and even eliminate slip as soon as it is detected, providing drivers with unrivaled traction. Like Quadra-Trac II, the Selec-Terrain system also features Rock mode with Quadra-Drive II.
