Begin Your Off-Road Adventures in Virginia!

Some things just go perfectly together, like Jeep and off-roading, for example! Jeep vehicles have been a symbol of off-road capability since the introduction of the 1941 Willys Jeep MA. Today, the Jeep brand has evolved immensely, but the off-road capability of its vehicles remains the same. Jeep is heavily involved in the off-roading community, with more than 60 Jeep Badge of Honor trails across North America, each one presenting unique challenges to put your vehicle to the test. There are two trails nearby, one here in Virginia and another in West Virginia, that can be found on Jeep's list of Badge of Honor trails. Below, you can read more about the Badge of Honor program and the Badge of Honor trails in the Virginia area!

What is a Jeep Badge of Honor Trail?

Jeep launched the Badge of Honor program in 2013 to recognize some of the most iconic off-road trails in the United States. One standout example is the legendary Rubicon Trail, which winds through the rugged terrain of Northern California's Sierra Nevada Mountains and is renowned as one of the most challenging trails out there. Other notable trails in the program include Hell's Revenge in Moab, Utah, Fern Ridge in Pennsylvania, and Peter's Mill Run in Virginia, among others. In total, the Badge of Honor program features 68 trails spanning 25 states across the nation. Each trail is designated with a color-coded system to indicate its difficulty level: green for easy, blue for moderate, black for hard, and red for extreme. Jeep also has its own smartphone app for the Badge of Honor program, giving users a detailed look at the trail with information about difficulty, obstacles, trail highlights, and a map overview. Additionally, you can check in at the Badge of Honor trail you plan on tackling. Once you make it to the other side, you'll receive a 'hard badge' in the mail, which drivers choose to display on their Jeep, claiming they've overcome that trail.

Peter's Mill Run

Virginia's very own Jeep Badge of Honor trail is Peter's Mill Run. A popular off-road trail located in the George Washington National Forest, near Edinburg, Virginia, is well-known among off-roading enthusiasts, offering a challenging yet scenic drive through the Appalachian Mountains. Spanning approximately 12 miles, Peter's Mill Run offers a moderate difficulty, meaning it is not too technical. However, it has rocky sections, steep inclines, and occasional narrow spots, which make it challenging for inexperienced drivers. The trail features a mix of dirt, rocks, and loose gravel, with some stream crossings. The rocks range in size from small to medium, and the trail can get muddy after rain. The trail winds through dense forests, offering views of the surrounding valleys, creeks, and wildlife. At various points, you can catch glimpses of the Shenandoah Valley.

Bearwallow Trail

Bearwallow Trail is another Jeep Badge of Honor off-road trail, located in the Monongahela National Forest in West Virginia. Bearwallow Trail spans approximately 7.2 miles and has a moderate to difficult rating making it suitable for experienced off-road drivers. The trail features a mix of rocky sections, steep climbs, and potential mud pits, especially after rainfall. When visiting Bearwallow Trail, expect a mix of dirt, rocks, and mud. The trail includes some tight turns and steep sections that require careful navigation. The trail has significant elevation changes, which can make for challenging ascents and descents, especially in wet conditions. It winds through dense forests, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains, valleys, and wildlife. It's particularly beautiful in the fall when the foliage changes color.
