What Safety Features Come Standard with the Jeep Grand Cherokee?

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is designed to keep you safe in the event of a collision with the required safety equipment such as seatbelt pretensioners, front airbags, front side airbags, and curtain airbags for all rows, along with a backup camera and a high-strength steel frame with side impact beams. However, Jeep believes that it is best to prevent a collision in the first place. That's why the entire Grand Cherokee lineup is equipped with an array of advanced driver assistance technologies. First is adaptive cruise control with stop and go. This allows you to set a speed as well as a distance to the vehicle in front of you and automatically adjusts the speed to maintain that distance while maintaining the selected speed when it is safe to do so. Meanwhile, active lane management is also standard. This uses both audio and visual warnings when you begin to stray from your lane of travel. If corrective action isn't immediately taken, the system will gently steer the vehicle back to the center of the lane. Another impressive feature is the forward collision warning system, which uses forward-facing sensors to alert you to a potential impact. If you don't take corrective action, the system will automatically apply the brakes. This system also features pedestrian/cyclist detection. The last standard driver assist is blindspot monitoring with rear cross-traffic warning. This uses rear-facing sensors to detect vehicles in your blindspots while on the highway. If one is detected, a light will illuminate on the mirror of the side that the vehicle is on. Meanwhile, the rear cross-traffic warning alerts you to a car, pedestrian, or cyclist crossing behind you while reversing.

Optional Jeep Grand Cherokee Safety Features

While the features mentioned above are standard across the entire Grand Cherokee lineup, even more advanced technologies are optional with others standard on higher trim levels. First is a 360-degree surround-view camera system. This uses multiple cameras to piece together an overhead view of the Grand Cherokee and its surroundings to help navigate tricky situations such as entering and exiting a parking space. It also helps while navigating narrow off-road trails. Additionally, drowsy driver detection monitors driver behavior, and if behaviors consistent with drowsiness are detected, such as changes in lane position and speed, the system will use audio and visual alerts, recommending you take a break from driving. To aid in tricky parking situations, the optional parallel/perpendicular park assist feature manages the steering into open parallel and perpendicular parking spots while directing you to shift gears and operate the brake and gas pedals. Arguably the Grand Cherokee's most advanced optional safety feature is the night vision camera. This uses forward-facing thermographic technology and infrared sensors to detect animals and pedestrians up to 328 feet ahead in the dark, allowing you ample time to take precautionary measures. The image of the road ahead and heat signatures are displayed on the 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster. Finally, the optional digital rearview mirror uses a rear-facing camera to give you an unobstructed view of the road behind you when you look at the interior rearview mirror.

What is Jeep Active Drive Assist?

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is eligible for an advanced semi-autonomous driving assistance technology, which Jeep calls Active Drive Assist. This feature integrates with the adaptive cruise control and active lane management systems to maintain vehicle speed and lane position. The basic Active Drive Assist requires the driver's hands to be on the steering wheel and will use audible and visual signals if no hands are detected. Meanwhile, Hands-Free Active Drive Assist is also available, allowing you to relinquish control of the steering wheel to the Active Drive Assist system to maintain your speed, distance from the leading vehicle, and lane position. The Hands-Free Active Drive Assist feature also features Curve Speed Control, which detects an upcoming curve and slows the vehicle accordingly while making the curve. Once the other side of the curve is reached, the vehicle will resume the preset speed. It also comes with assisted lane change. While driving on the highway, if you wish to change lanes while Hands-Free Active Drive Assist is active, simply activate the turn signal in the direction of the lane you choose to enter. When the system determines the coast is clear, the vehicle will move itself into that lane with a natural feel. It is important to note that Active Drive Assist requires your full attention with your hands on the wheel, while Hands-Free Active Drive Assist allows you to take your hands off the wheel while still paying full attention to the road. Also, note that autonomous driving systems of any type are only for use on approved roadways. However, more than 125,000 miles of United States highways are approved. Active Drive Assist uses sensors and cameras to detect if a roadway is marked properly.
