Coupling muscle car spirit with the size and space of a CUV, the Dodge Hornet is equal parts stylish, powerful, and functional. Dodge is known for its powerful engines and performance technologies, which both join the 2023 Hornet lineup. Please continue reading below to learn more about the 2023 Dodge Hornet and the power that it has to offer!

Dodge Hornet GT Powertrain

The GT trim is the first trim level and comes with the standard engine, which is Dodge's new Hurricane 4 engine. The Hurricane 4 is a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder engine. It uses direct fuel injection and Engine Stop/Start (ESS) technology to increase fuel economy and performance. The Hornet's performance and torque responsiveness is enhanced by the twin-scroll turbocharger with an electric-actuated wastegate. The temperature of the throttle body, turbocharger, and intake air are regulated by a water-to-air intercooler to ensure the running temperature remains in check. The Hurricane 4 engine pairs with a smooth and robust nine-speed automatic transmission with steering wheel paddle shifters for available sequential shift control. All-wheel drive is standard for the GT trim and uses active torque vectoring to provide phenomenal handling in the corners.

Dodge Hornet GT Performance Features

Drivers of the Dodge Hornet GT have the option to put the Hornet into Sport mode. When additional performance is desired, it can be accessed at the push of a button conveniently located on the center console. Entering sport mode unleashes the engine's full performance potential and allows for a 0-60 time of 6.5 seconds. This increased performance is provided by optimizing the shift timing, allowing for higher RPMs to increase performance. Additionally, the throttle response is refined to provide more rapid acceleration. To help drivers hug the corners even at higher speeds, Sport mode tightens the steering feel. As was mentioned above, the Hornet GT features sequential shifting with steering wheel paddle shifters.

Dodge Hornet R/T Powertrain

While the Dodge Hornet R/T is the most powerful trim in the Hornet's lineup, it is also the most efficient. The Hornet R/T is Dodge's first-ever entry in the plug-in hybrid electric vehicle market. Under the hood of the R/T trim is a 1.3L turbocharged I-4 engine that powers the front wheels. Meanwhile, the rear wheels are powered by an electric drive module or EDM for short. Power is provided to the EDM by a battery pack recharged by an external power source. While this system provides phenomenal fuel efficiency by prioritizing electric power, it also gives the Hornet R/T 285 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque. Up to 184 lb-ft of the system's torque is sent to the wheels instantaneously by the electric motor, providing exciting performance. The engine pairs with a six-speed automatic transmission, which also provides sequential shifting with steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters.

Dodge Hornet Performance Features

The Hornet R/T comes exclusively with Dodge's new PowerShot feature, which gives drivers a 15-second burst of an extra 25 horsepower for enhanced performance. This can be used from a dead stop to take a full second off the 0-60 time or at cruising speeds to easily merge onto the highway or pass another vehicle. PowerShot can be used as many times as the driver would like but requires a 15-second cooldown period between each use. The feature is activated by pulling both paddle shifters at the same time while pushing the accelerator pedal. Another exclusive feature of the Hornet R/T is the EV drive modes. These put the driver in control of the vehicle's usage and efficiency. Hybrid is the Hornet R/T's default mode, intelligently meshing gas and electric power for maximum fuel economy without sacrificing performance when it is requested. Meanwhile, Electric mode disengages the turbocharged gas-powered engine to provide up to 30 miles of near-silent, emissions-free driving. Lastly, E-Save mode operates oppositely by disabling the electric motor. By running solely on gas power, E-Save allows the battery to maintain or increase its state of charge through regenerative braking.
