Can the 2022 Grand Wagoneer Go Off-Roading?

Can the 2022 Grand Wagoneer Go Off-Roading?

Upon its 1984 release, the Grand Wagoneer quickly became recognized as the premium SUV to lead the pack. Combining an automatic transmission with four-wheel drive for the first time in automotive history, the Grand Wagoneer took capability to a whole new level. After production of the Grand Wagoneer came to an end in 1991, it is finally returning to the automotive industry for the 2022 model year! The 2022 Grand Wagoneer will return in the same way it did years ago, as one of the most capable premium SUVs on the market! The all-new Grand Wagoneer can absolutely take on any off-road adventure, and below, we're showing you how it's done!

Engine and transmission of the 2022 Grand Wagoneer

The Grand Wagoneer features a tested 6.4L V8 capable of kicking out 471 horsepower and 455 lb-ft of torque. The engine is linked with a robust TorqueFlite 8-speed automatic transmission for smooth shifts and steady torque distribution. The Grand Wagoneer also features cutting-edge fuel-saving technologies like cylinder deactivation and Variable Valve Timing to improve gas mileage and enhance engine performance.

4x4 drivetrains of the 2022 Grand Wagoneer

The Grand Wagoneer will be available with three capable drivetrains. Quadra-Trac I is the standard full-time 4x4 system and features a single-speed transfer case that splits engine torque by 48% to the front axle and 52% to the rear axle to provide optimal control on a variety of road conditions. Quadra-Trac II operates with a network of sensors to detect wheel slippage and a two-speed transfer case with Active 4-Low to automatically redistribute torque to the axle with the most traction when slippage occurs. While Quadra-Drive II operates similarly, extra traction is provided by an electronic limited-slip rear differential. As a result, Quadra-Drive II will not only limit slip as it occurs, but it can also predict slippage and counteract it as the vehicle leaves a stop on a slick road surface and make the necessary adjustments to prevent a loss of traction.

Selec-Terrain Traction Management

The Grand Wagoneer 4x4 systems can be controlled by the Selec-Terrain dial on the center console. The driver can choose from five selectable drive modes, Auto, Snow, Sport, Rock, and Sand/Mud modes. Auto puts the system in control and automatically adjusts the four-wheel-drive system to adapt to changes in the road and weather conditions. Snow mode optimizes the traction control and 4WD systems to provide maximum traction and limit wheel slippage. Sport mode adjusts the transmission shift points and throttle control to increase engine output. At the same time, the air suspension lowers to Aero mode to provide better aerodynamics for a sporty, fun-to-drive experience. Rock mode raises the air springs to their highest setting while the two-speed transfer case will automatically put itself into 4-Low and coordinate with the transmission and throttle to provide optimal control on the trails. Finally, sand/Mud mode adjusts the 4WD system to detect slippage and respond to it by redistributing torque instantly.

Quadra-Lift air suspension

The Grand Wagoneer employs a four-corner air spring suspension system instead of traditional coil springs. This provides a more customizable driving experience and a smoother ride, greater performance, and off-road capability. The air springs come with adaptive damping, which will read the road conditions and adjust the firmness of the air springs to keep the cabin as level as possible while the springs absorb the bumps. The Grand Wagoneer's Normal Ride Height (NRH) provides 8 inches of ground clearance and is the default setting. Aero mode lowers the ground clearance to 7.4 inches for better aerodynamics for better on-road driving performance. Park mode lowers the suspension to the lowest setting of 6.4 inches, making entering and exiting the Grand Wagoneer easy for all passengers. Off-Road 1 lifts the suspension to 9 inches of ground clearance to provide better ground clearance over mud or sand. Off-Road 1 is enabled when the Selec-Terrain dial is set to Snow or Sand/Mud modes. Off-Road 2 lifts the suspension to the maximum setting of 10 inches of ground clearance and is activated when Rock mode is selected on the Selec-Terrain dial.
